windows 7 upgrade

Post by VEGETA »

So hey best buy had windows 7 upgrade falily edition (for 3 pcs) for 200$, considering one copy is 130$ thats 3 for less thne price of 2.

but here is the deal with upgrade, you have to have a copy of vista, xp or windows 7 installed one system. Thats the trick windows 7 can be installed, so install files and when it askes for cd key it will not authenticate if its a blank hard drive. What you do is restart after first install and install a second time, when you get the chance to format the drive the initial install is on DO IT, it rmemebers it saw windows, and then keep going and now the cd key will work. No xp or anything required. So the cheap upgrade copy is all you need. I wil be trying this again on this pc (installed on dads new one tonight) but hey seams liek you can get upgrade cost for compleate isntall.

Figured I would share

Also, you could install the free win7 RC .... that counts as an upgrade too, but it sounds like your way is easier than that.

I bought and uploaded the Windows 7 Ugrade to my media PC at home and did the upgrade through a Remote Desktop session; after it rebooted it took another 90 minutes, but it came up, nice and upgraded to Windows 7.

I did run the upgrade advisor over the last couple weeks and made sure everything it complained about was up to date (mostly old drivers needing to be updated); today it ran a compatibility test during the setup which suggested my printer drivers might not work if I upgrade, so updated them, reran the setup, it said life was good and on I went.

Overall Win Vista->7 was REALLY smooth; at least on the first computer. I bought the home edition copies for $50 back awhile ago, and they should show up this week, so I'll get our desktops updated. I expected it will be the same time consuming but painless experience.

I was impressed that I was beginning to end able to do the upgrade through a remote desktop session though; pretty sweet.

Oh, and what Veg is suggesting to do will work; it worked with Vista as well, but it's not legal if you don't have an upgrade worthy copy of Windows. I think we all, by now, have a legit copy of at least XP, so probably a non-issue... I think the rational is that people can do an install this way if their machine explodes without first having to load some old ass copy of Windows; I don't think MS officially acknowledges the loophole even though it obviously exists...

they were selling it to anyone with a .edu address for $30 and I got my ultimate edition for free. I think they'd rather sell a zillion copies cheap than have it pirated.

Thanks for the heads up about the $30 copies for students by the way. Both my wife and I are going to school, so that's a total of $40 savings... in other news, I have 2x$50 copies of Windows Home Premium Upgrade I'm selling; I'll offer them here before I go to ebay; they're unopened; hell I haven't even actually received them yet... believe retail copies have both a 32 and 64 bit disk so you should be safe either way.

Hey Hudson, I'll take one of those Windows 7 Upgrade copies from you. I want to put it on my Vista laptop. You have a Paypal account?

Sure. Got them last night; still wrapped in the shrink wrap. They are Windows 7 Home Premium UPGRADE. They look to be normal retail boxes to me, and contain both a 32-bit and 64-bit disc. If that all looks kosher to you guys, throw money at me from paypal: jason@montleon.com; One copy each @ Panzer and Softball and send me a PM with your addresses when you do so I can send them out to you; I'll do priority USPS if that works with you guys; post office is right across the street from where I work...

For my review:
+ Disk Defragment has a percentage complete now
+ Windows Media Center has good built-in Netflix and Internet TV support now. I liked watching CBS Classic Star Trek Episodes last night without having to go to CBS's website. I'll definitely be digging around more to see what cool stuff is available from all the channels they've included.
+ Super easy, if somewhat slow Windows Vista Upgrades; three computers, albeit two with identical hardware, and not one hitch.
+ Window Live Mail was easy to install on my wifes computer after the upgrade killed Windows Mail. It warns you about this, and I believe it was due to all the anti-trust bullshit that they removed Windows Mail from the installer. Simply went to Windows Updates as you're directed to by the information before installing, installed Windows Live Mail from the Windows Live Essentials and you've now got Windows Live Mail. On first run it imports all your old Windows Mail stuff and you're on your way.
+ $30-$50 for an upgrade; can't complain too much; that's a relatively fair price...
+ UAC is a hell of a lot less annoying; I still disable it though: Contol Panel>User Accounts and select Change User Account Control Settings. Run that slider down...

- Loss of the Classis Program menu. WTF. As my wife said, would it really have killed them to incorporate the 2KB of code it would have taken to leave that feature. I've configured it in a livable manner, but GRRRR.

It's basically Vista tuned up. Not too shabby. As I'm sure most of you know I didn't hate Vista, and I can't wait to stop hearing about how it sucked so much. Windows Vista Release 2, i.e. Windows 7 will get me there.

And I still don't get why all these assholes in the world think we like LARGE icons; shit I have BAD eyes and I still want small icons on my taskbar and menus. Just dish through the Task Bar and Start Menu settings and turn the small icons if they're not already. It's not just Microsoft; it's all these program devs; vmware, mozilla even gnome desktop stuff... Praise Jebus there is more screen real estate to use my programs...
