Ok i looked into this some today. Looks like you drop into AC (Arena commander) select multiplayer. Then, you have an option to go into an open group, OR private match... If you choose Private Match, you will get a code. This code you can give to those who want to play with you in AC. I have no idea how many can join a Private match.
There dosnt seem to be a friend system implemented yet. Word in the grape vine is they are working on lobbies in the AC. But, no word on how soon that will be.
if anyone gets their controls setup and want to try this give me a shout!

Bronurstomp and i did a little of this yesterday.
at this point. the system seems a little buggy. it took about 4 attempts to get into the match together. the server booted us out a couple of times as well. but towards the end, we did get a few good matches in without any problems.
we only did the Vanduul swarm thing at this point, but i thought it was fun.
