A deflection by definition is where something takes a change from original direction having come into contact with another medium - as in soccer where someone scores a goal by way of a deflection (from a nother player for example) But within the military aviation environment, a deflection shot is simply - aiming off from the target itself, in order to make a hit during a dogfight. Unless they are talking about ricochet rounds killing a pilot or crew member perhaps?

Kodiak is correct, I believe -- it's any shot that's not directly head or tail on.
