My 1st Real test of the 4.01 patch

Post by Buffalo Six »

Last night was my flying squads 1st night flying the 4.01 patch that counted.

It was one of my missions. Feb(ish) 1943 off Guadalcanal in F4U-1 "Birdcage" Corsiars flying CAP over a inbound supply convoy NW of Savo Is.

Oh and it was ugly weather, dark and rainy but not a thunderstorm......

So there we are lined up on Fighter One, waiting to take off. The CO in Red1 rolls out first....and goes careening off to the left and buries the prop then does a head stand. Red2 veers so far left that he hits the parking revetments and goes boom. Rinse and repeat down the line. I got a little squrrily but stayed on the runway fine (some right rudder trim and a locked tail wheel help a LOT) and one other got off the ground.

Of course we were all on comms and as guys do, we were just ripping the guys that ended up as a twisted pile of spare parts....only to have the next guy do the exact same thing. I was laughing so hard i was horse. I mean several of the guys I fly with are active pilots or retired pilots.

After restarting the COOP 4 times, and changing to clear weather (the buffeting was insane to those of us that actually got into the air) we proceeded to our CAP over the convoy with 3 flights staggered from 12-16,000 feet. We got there and looked down to see Kates circling the transports like sharks and the DD escort was doing it;s best but.....it looked grim.

I called for White flight (mine) to head down into the Kates (6 or so of them) while Red flight was going to stay as High cover and Blue was going to head north of the convoy to break up any further attacks.

Down we go, I jump on a Kate that still has a fish, take his wing off and he dives into the water.....I climb for alt. We got 4 of the 6 but looks like one ship took a fish and is bow to the sky and sinking. I'm trying to get my flight gathered up and not paying much attention to the chatter on the radio when I fly right thru a flight of Vals maing dive attacks on the transports.....oh crap!

What I missed was Blue flight missing the Vals but getting jumped by 2 Sho-tois of Zekes and getting shot to ribbons and Red flight has missed the Vals and is chasing shadows. So once again I dive to follow the Vals that are busy sinking 2 more transports. I flame one, a wonderful flamer.
I head after another one low on the water, after skiing around 2 ship masts, and I am just about the hammer him when I see tracers just off my right wing....not good friendly red ones but those Star Wars light saber ones of the Japs.....aw crap!

I'm low, pretty slow, and out of luck. I think they fixed the AI so that they can now shoot deflection because the old method of a slight turn and they miss is over. I got hammered and it was all I could do to get some flaps out before I went swimming.

I like the new FM, even if it wil take time to get used to. I do think they have the plane feeling like it is on a gimble, but I think they will work that out. Overall I give this the Buffalo stamp of approval even if I did end up in the drink.

nice write up Buff. Thx.

what do the AI look like interms of UFO moves? are they more on our level now?

going to join us tonight maybe? we so air starts and that may not be to your liking, but we do it because one of our guys does not have rudder pedals (Kodiak!!!!).

well....the Kate was in torp droping mode (or close to his realese point) so he was doing the stright and level about 20 feet off the wave tops. And the Vals went right by me....let me rephrase that....I flew thru a flight of Vals as they went by me in 80 degree dives, one went byt at 12'oclock and 9 o'clock.....how they missed runing into me I'll never know.

I really never saw the Zeke that got me, by the time I saw him he was on my 6 and hammering me.

Ya'll fly that German hardware right? Nothign wrong with that except I have not flown a german plane since.....well at least since PF came out. You fly COOPs or just DF? I'm more of a COOP guy but give me a shout tonight on comms.

dude, we ONLY do Coop... it is very rare we fly dogfight.

we use dcg right now, but are looking at scorched earth. maybe your group would want to participate in that as the other side?

we have avoided Pacific as the Japanese planes with UFO capabilites are a bit frustrating... i also think we could learn a lot from you and your group... :)

I sure as heck fly the German planes! I've done a full single player campaign in the JU-87 and BF-110. We fly COOP online. I personally have no interest in dogfight. I much prefer flying as a team and working as a team towards accomplishing common objectives.

well the summer has hit the group a little hard and we are down to about 10 regulars right now. Some are very active in FS9 activites like Around the world races and one or 2 fly in a air racing league once a month (Reno style)

I like to get in FS9 and take a B-29 to Siapan (takes about a week) or fly around in Shockwaves Heavy Bombers pack or thier P-51D/H pack, or RealAir's Spit Mk 14. Both Shockwave and RealAir are HIGHLY recommended. I have shelled out for the flight manuels for the B17,B24,B29,P51D,SpitMk14 and Super Decathalon, and all fly right with the numbers in the Dash 1's.

Anyway back to the IL2 thing. I have flown the F4U and varients since PF came out...in fact thats what brought me back to IL2. My former flying squad had burned out of CFS3 and went to PF to fly "Hawgs"....I cam back to join them. I've flown soem of the Zekes just "To know thy Enemy" sort of thing...yes they are like kites but you can knock one down with a well placed rock. I do remember I liked the F-2 (or was it 4) and the G-2...after that the 109 seemed over burdended. Please tell me you dont want me to get in a 190....I feel like I'm flying a Gee Bee R2 as stable as that thing is :D

Steel give me a shout tonight on comms, I'll be in the guild wars channel. Just give me enough time to get my CH sticks fired up and my TrackIR going.

Just looking forward to flying against a more 'human' AI adversary. Mind you, considering the disadvantage we were at, we did fairly good.

The 190's are deadly and very effective if you know what you're doing. It's not the easiest aircraft to fly but if you just keep in mind that you dont do turning battles with the Russian fighters you'll be ok!
