81 years ago today the Normandy beach landings (Utah, Omaha, Juno, Gold and Sword) occurred. An 18 year old soldier who participated in that invasion would be 99 years old now.

It was quite sobering for me walking on Omaha beach. The distance from the beach to the cliffs was not that far at all. But if you take into consideration that you would be carrying 50+ lbs of equipment, made heavier from being waterlogged, running on wet sand, with mortars and grenades going off near you and .50cal bullets whizzing past you, and the traffic jam ahead of you and behind you, and the obstacles, and so on and so on...
...that truly was the longest day.
