Wings Tavern Foothold Kola Fri Night 121225

Post by Bones »

Tonight's mission was to take Kilua and Kalifax. I had scouted ahead to take out air defenses in the F-16 but only uncovered a single SA-15. Being rusty on the HARM system and not paying attention to how close I got got me shot down by the Tor/Gauntlet. Its launch however clued off Wingy as to where he was and he and Panzer attacked it. They were able to neutralize both sites. I noticed a column headed out to Kalifax and tried to strafe them with the gun and got a few hits but it wasn't enough to stop them. They eventually took Kalifax back.

I came back with an F-14B to cover with a CAP since multiple MiG-29s had spawned. Panzer was in an F-15C attacking a 2 ship of Fulcrums and and got one before he got shot down. By the time I arrived on scene, his remaining MiG had bugged out, but a new two ship was inbound on me. There was also an enemy IL-76 AWACS. The MiGs were far enough away for me to concentrate on the high asset value of the Candid. I attacked hm with an AIM-54C Phoenix shot fired from about 80 nm away. The Phoenix worked as advertised and took out the IL-76. I turned my attention to the 2 MiG-29s and fired on them with Phoenix as well. The first MiG turned hard on it and was able to break lock, but I closed with a Sidewinder. He broke with the Sidewinder as well, right into the ground.

The second MiG became the target of my next Phoenix shot, but in trying to escape that missile, he too crashed into the ground. The final missile shot on another target resulted in him committing suicide also, crashing into the ground.

With no other targets and an SA-15 attacking me at the newly recaptured Kalifax, I ran for home.

During the hops we received a radio message stating that the enemy right hand man was sighted northeast, so I took a Hornet and went after him. Using the intel, I received grid coordinates and put them into my nav system and was able to drop off 2 JDAMs from 40,000 ft to kill him in the building he was meeting in. ON the way back I was targeted by a P-19 and had noticed and EWR radar on the way back, si with my remaining 2 JDAMs, I also hit those sites. RTBing was largely uneventful.

So we had a little bit of trouble taking an holding ground, but I believe Wingy was able to take a C-130 and take some neutralized territory back. To improve, I will have to re-familiarize myself with the MFD pages for the HARM and SMS, as well as remind myself that I don't need to rush up on the target--that's why they made standoff munitions! It was also interesting how many bandits decided to just give up or crash when they had a Phoenix locked on them. Guess they programmed wisdom and cowardice into the AI.

Also we need to be a coherent package again, and be mindful of where each other are. But overall, it was not a bad night and I'm sure we'll take more ground from the enemy next week!

See you in Cyprus on Wednesday!
